June 2017Miraj is the ascension of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) by overcoming the sky bed in Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. Celebrated by Muslims on the 27th night of the month of Rajab according to the Muslim calendar, this miracle’s influence can be seen in literature, music and books.
The miracle of miraj has been featured in many Turkish, Arabic and Persian works, and a great deal of prose and poetry has been written to honor it. Some even composed miraj poetry to be read at mosques.
The visual depiction of miraj can also be seen in many works. Featuring Prophet Muhammad’s (pbuh) ascension into the skies with angels mounted on the steed al-Buraq, the miraj depictions are featured in many books including the biography of the Prophet, stories of the prophets, special books in miraj and divan, hamse (a collection of five divans) and masnawi, strange creations, falname (a book of miniatures with a short fortune passage underneath), and Hamle-i Haideri.
Opened on May 13 at Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum in Sultanahmet, the exhibition The Ascension of the Prophet and the Stages of His Journey – The Ascension in Ottoman Culture offers an extensive examination of these reflections. Organized by Bağımsız Sanat Vakfı with the support of Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the exhibition’s project managers are Nicole N. Kançal Ferrari and Ayşe Taşkent. You can visit until June 30.
